3Great value if you don't overpay
By Randel Evans
Warhammer 40K players know the value of a Battleforce: they tend to be great deals that make starting up a new army (or significantly expanding an existing one) much easier on the wallet. The Tyranid Battleforce is considered one of the best deals Games Workshop has ever assembled, but only if you know what you should be paying. This box set has been officially discontinued to make way for the 5th Edition Battleforce, and the prices have skyrocketed as a result, which defeats the purpose of buying it unless you find a seller who is giving you an appropriate price.Let's take a look at how the Tyranid Battleforce should be priced.First, the Battleforce contents and their list price at Games Workshop's online store:3x Warriors @ $35 for a 3-pack = $358x Genestealers @ $30 for an 8-pack = $3016x Gaunts @ $30 for a 16-pack = $351x Carnifexes @ $45 for per model = $45Total price if you bought them all through GW: $145At the old sticker price of around $90-100 or so, this was a fantastic deal that amounted to buying the infantry models (which you need for practically every 'nid army) and getting a Carnifex for free. At this point I'd imagine some of you reading this have noticed that the Tyranid Battleforces for sale on Amazon tend to be quite a bit more expensive than $100: at the time I am writing this, the featured price is an outrageous $164 through a third-party retailer with a handful of other $145 per box sales. The upshot of this is that if you aren't careful you will end up paying at or above Games Workshop prices for each model, never mind the fact this is supposed to be a heavily discounted product on a per-model basis. Given that there are a number of reliable online retailers who will sell Warhammer models for a flat 20% off of GW's retail price, you should not purchase the Tyranid Battleforce unless you are paying (145*.80) = $116 or less.
