5Good Headers for a V6
By Blindaviator
The item I ordered was the painted version. The paint they use is NOT heat resistant and will burn off rapidly.I took the time to strip the headers with a soda blaster and repainted them with flame proof ceramic paint from Autozone. So far after 1 week the paint is still holding. The only real drawback I found to these headers is the bolts to connect the header flanges to the Y-Pipe were about an inch too long. I had to hit my local bolt and nut store to get replacements. I also went to a little more expense and purchased stainless steel bolts as they will not rust from the heat. One other thing I noticed was the Y-Pipe was not one piece. The down pipes and the right side header flange were part of the Y-Pipe but the drivers side was a separate piece. I can only assume this was done so that you could custom fit it to your particular needs. It was simple enough to adjust the drivers side piece and use the supplied bracket to hold them together and in my case I had a local muffler shop weld the two pieces together for a permanent leak free fit.The end of the Y-Pipe is made to slide over the stock exhaust pipe just in front of the catalytic converter. It is a simple enough process to bolt the headers and Y-Pipe into place and then cut off the stock pipe to slide into the Y-Pipe receiver. Expect to have this welded by your local muffler shop or at home if you have the welder.I had read many articles around the web stating that these headers can be installed without removing the engine or other major modifications. Unfortunately I cannot comment on those as I replaced the head gaskets at the same time as installing these. As such I had most of the top half of the engine removed which gave me far more room than you would otherwise have.Having said that when I was installing these I had the heads on the engine when I attempted to fit them in. I found that the passenger side was easier to install than the drivers (even though it appeared the opposite would be true.) The passenger side was able to slide right in from the top and virtually fell all the way through to the ground. The drivers side had a lot more difficulty as the heat shield around the starter had to be removed to install it. After install of the header the heat shield could be reinstalled. After that it was a simple matter of installing the Y-Pipe and adjusting. After a week of ownership I have noticed an overall improvement of power and throttle response. So far I have yet to take the car on an extended trip to assess any possible fuel economy changes.Overall I would say the money was well invested.

4Not bad
By jeff
There is good and bad like with every product.the flanges to the block are nice and thick so i don't foresee any warping and leaking. It does require cutting and welding to the factory exhaust also.Things i don't like are the clamp style connection to the drivers side header. Makes it hard to get the bolt's started since your fighting 2 moving and pivoting pieces trying to line them all up.Also the bolts that came in the set to attatch the y pipe to the header are about 1/4 inch too long to seal up. So either get some other bolts like i did or buy several washers to stack under the nut.The nuts are also steel locks so once you get them tight and realize they are too long, you try to back them off and it strips the bolt threads.

4Killer headers for the price
By AtrumRosa
Professional installation highly recommended. I had a friend's exhaust shop put these on for me, as it requires welding near the cat, and the ball joints could use a professional touch. Now the Good: You can't beat the price. These usually retail for 250. The sound difference is quite noticeable, it imparts a throaty muscle car rumble to even a modest engine. There is a definite increase in horsepower as well, though it's not noticeable at first because the torque delivery is much smoother. You don't get thrown into the back of your seat, but you'll find the speed limit appears faster than ever. The Bad: There were some flaws with the set up, unfortunately. The flanges were slightly bowed, the shop had to machine the mating surfaces to insure a proper seal. The included gaskets are also of very mediocre quality. The header bolts are also of the improper length, the shop had to use their own (small extra charge). These headers also come uncomfortably close to the spark plug wires. I'm going to be buying some heat shielding boots for them for peace of mind, I suggest you do the same. The Ugly: Probably the most head-scratching aspect of the kit would be the paint on on the headers. It is NOT heat resistant. Immediately after running, the paint will melt and flake off. My Firebird now smells like burnt paint. I'm completely at a loss as to why Pacesetter would impart an extra cost to the customer (they have to be painted by someone) for something completely useless for both cosmetics and performance. They would be perfectly fine with just the bare metal. I'd suggest stripping the paint off before installation if you have the time and patience. I strongly recommend saving up a little more and getting the ceramic-armored version of this product. Conclusion: Not a perfect product, but a good choice due to lack of other options for the V6.
