5self-regulation - a big benefit
By M. Moebius
I did a lot of homework before ordering this cable vs. the other options as it costs three to four times the competition - but you get what you pay for. I used it to melt existing ice on my roof and gutters. If I had bought this in the summer and could mount it correctly I might have chosen the other models for cost. For existing ice - it's the only option (the competition cannot be overlapped or you will kill the cable at the overlap point - and the cable wants to curl up on itself. It's also the only model I found that can also be used for pipes if needed. And the only six watt/foot.The description is wrong - it's actually six watt/foot, not five. It may yet be more energy efficient than the five due to the self regulation. After buying it I discovered that it's made by Tycothermal. I don't think I can embed the link if you want more info go to the tycothermal dot com website and navigate to Applications | Light Commercial / Residential | Snow Melting | Roof & Gutter De-icing. Here's the blurb from the website:"Tyco Thermal Controls provides self-regulating heating cables that automatically adjust their power output to compensate for temperature changes.Raychem brand self-regulating heating cables consist of two parallel conductors embedded in a heating core made of conductive polymer. The core is radiation-crosslinked to ensure long-term reliability.Heat is generated as electric current passes through the conductive polymer core between the conductors. As the ambient temperature drops, the number of electrical paths through the core increases and more heat is produced. Conversely, as the temperature rises, the core has fewer electrical paths and less heat is produced."Cool!

4So far works very well.
By VirtualAlaskan
I've used this to melt run off channels around my garage and walkways so that snow melt and rain don't puddle in bad places. It has worked as desired. The THHN type sheathing on it isn't quite as tough as I'd like for my somewhat off-label use.Shipping was _very_ high, but I knew about that when I hit "buy".
