5I like this Cat back system!
By thefactfindingmom
This review is for my 91 Ford Explorer, 4.0L, 4 door, 4WD on mostly stock with JBA headers and MagnaFlow Cat. 6 weeks and 1500 miles later...First off, the quality of the whole kit is nice. All the hardware was complete including hangers and bolts. The tailpipe is 2 piece and a chrome tip and the fitment was good, but not great. The piping goes between the shock absorber and the sway bar link and there is only 1 inch space on either side before touch them. This made precise fitment really important. With 2 pieces it was a chore, but I am doubtfull and 1 piece would work with older sagging springs and general wear and tear on a 21 year old truck. I had to really take my time and go step by step working my way back form the cat connection to the tip. But I was rewarded with a nice setup that only required tightening up the clamps once to make sure everything was good and tight. The stock location hangers work perfect and the look is very nice exiting just behind the rear passenger tire. The tip is nice and fits snuggly. The sound is great. Given I replaced my whole exhaust, I can't comment on how the muffler alone sounds, but as a system, I don't think I could ask for a better sound. Throaty, yet strong and full. It'll never sound like a v-8, but it doesn't scream hot rod either. It does not boom at any rpm, but there is a slight resonance that is most noticeable at 3-4K when on it and just above 1K. These 2 rpm bands make the loudest pressure inside the cab. Volume wise, really no louder than stock. My wife and kids like it fine, of course the old muffler was blown out and loud as heck, but when I made a field repair to the stock muffler, that lasted 1 hour on 3 hour drive, the Gibson muffler was better sounding WITH similar volume.
